Eggs and aspirin

Posted on 03/25/2019 by Walk with a Doc
W.O.D.
Walk of the Day.
Some of you within the CrossFit world know better than me, WOD stands for Workout of the Day (500 burpees, 180 squats, 45 kettlebell swings, etc.).
To me, CrossFit is like boating, better to have friends that do it.
Then again, maybe that’s why I look like Olive Oyl.
We’re issuing you a challenge over the next 3 days.
Our winner(s) will have their walk published here (and social media) to inspire others across the Walkosphere and we’ll throw in a long sleeve T-shirt.
Here’s the challenge – walk to a regular (or irregular) destination that you have never walked to.
Example: I live 1.1 miles from Kroger and for 13 years, I’ve driven there. I have a million reasons why.
Then when I started training for this, I began getting creative with new ways to add steps.
When I thought of Kroger, my whole world lit up. 4000+ steps and avocados?
The more I thought about it, the better it got.
I throw on my rucksack, grab a bottle of water and some headphones. Oh, this works. I listen to one my daughter’s and my favorite podcast on the way over. I immerse myself in nature, oh this is great.
The mile flies by, those automatic double glass doors open and I grow even happier!
Wowwww, I LOVE THIS SONG and totally forgot about it! (stick it out to the end)
SO happy. The apples are a brilliant red, the bananas such a bright yellow.
I feel like I just turned 16 with the keys to my parents’ car that will take me anywhere.
Freedom.
Then I see some friends in front of the Kroger Starbucks; the coffee smells fantastic.
“Hey, Wokadog, did you see the news? Should I still take my aspirin?”
Short answer is:
(1) Ask your doctor, and odds are…
(2) If you’ve never had cardiovascular disease – no
(3) If you’ve had a stroke, stent, bypass, or MI – yep.
Ohmg, this is great! I made it here by myself and I can finish my podcast on the way home. My rucksack’s filled with fruit, vegetables, whole grains and some flowers (only $3.99 ssshhhhh!)
sticking out of the top for Krissy.
I also grab a copy of one my favorite magazines.
I hear in May they’re saying, “Ask Your Doctor if Nature is Right for You”.
I see a patient next to the crackers,
“Hey doc, I didn’t recognize you in your sandals. What is this stuff about walking my dog?The story I saw on NBC gave some great tips.”
“Yeah, Bill (HIPAA) I caught that. Good piece.”
Nothing much better than walking your dog.
Finally, I make my way past the eggs and don’t know what do think…
I have now heard enough that I would recommend 3 or less/week to my patients that eat eggs.
I make my way through the self check out and I’m feeling pretty awesome as I head back out into nature. Beautiful nature.
So…what’s your ‘Kroger’?
It is a library, a restaurant, an ATM?
This weekend, we challenge you to take a ‘mini’-risk, a ‘mini’-adventure and walk somewhere new.
And for Pete’s sake, please tell us about it.
We want to share your idea and maybe, just maybe, send you the same long sleeve T we’re all wearing around the office.
cheers
